All we teach English for a purpose: just for your self (to feel more confident in our developing society) to work (to apply this knowledge to advance their careers), to communicate with the inhabitants of English-speaking countries (in order to get hold of friends overseas), for the future of the marriage union with other countries, and so on. One of the most common goals of learning English is the opportunity to travel abroad without being tied to the interpreter.
