The correct approach to irregular verbs in English

«And that’s all you need to learn ?!» — a typical reaction of students learning English when they first encounter with the table of irregular verbs. In total, there are about 300 English, 100 of which are most frequently used. Yes, it’s necessary not just to learn, and know very well, not to be confused, to correctly pronounce and recognize when you read some text or communicate with anyone. «This is unreal!» — Such a response, I often received and continue to receive from their students. As a rule, I answer: «Nothing is impossible! I learned, then, and you will succeed! I am an ordinary person, no better or smarter than you. »

Typically, recognition of the reality of the problem — it is a huge step forward on the way to solving the problem. Before you begin to study the table, you need to relax, take a few deep breaths and tell yourself, «I can. I will. It’s easy! «A positive attitude — half the battle. Rapper Eminem was right when in the song «Lose yourself» said the following sentence: «You can do anything you set your mind to» (Literally: You can do all that set up their minds). Yes, the mood — it’s a great thing! Adjust? So, the first step has been taken.

Now you need to understand the importance and the need to perform this task. You are serious about learning English? You have a strong motivation? If the answer is positive, the study of irregular verbs is essential. It’s base is the foundation of knowledge of the language, without it would be difficult to move forward. So it has historically, that the most frequently used colloquially verbs (to eat — eat, to drink — drink, to sleep — sleep, to go — to go, to have — to have and so on. D.) Are incorrect.

So you’ve realized the importance of this issue and were able to convince myself that everything will turn out. It’s time to act. How to remember all these verbs? Unfortunately, there is no one unique method of memory that will suit everyone. We are all different, have their own characteristics, so there are many different approaches to the study of the material. To understand which method would be most effective for you, you need to try different options! Experiment! Be creative! The more methods you employ to accomplish this task, the more chances you have to get the desired result.

How are the table of irregular verbs? There are several options. There are tables where there are three forms of the verb (1 — infinitive, 2 — the form of the past tense, and 3 — the perfect kind of communion) and translation. Most tables are no Russian translation. Verbs can be presented in alphabetical order (classic version), or collected in a small sub-group on pronunciation.

  • Irregular verbs in alphabetical order can be found in our article «Irregular verbs».

Below you can download the table, which I personally was on the basis of pronunciation and that offers all its students. I hope you it will also be useful.

How best to memorize the verbs? First, do not try to learn the entire table in one sitting. Break it into small pieces for 7-10 words. Thus, for 10-14 days you can learn the 100 most frequently used verbs. If the verbs are in alphabetical order, learn words that begin with the same letter. For example, today you decided to learn all the words of the letter «b», their 10 pieces. You can take just two letters.

If you no longer relished Table 2, 1-2 can teach subgroups day. Personally, I like the table 2, where the verbs are divided into subgroups according to the pronunciation. Always fond of poetry! Most of my students shared the view that it is easier to remember words that rhyme than the words that begin with the same letter. The choice is yours. The main thing — teach!

Another effective method of memorization of irregular verbs is the study of poetry in Russian interspersed with English verbs. Here, the words of a rhyme with each other, or with Russian words. A great way for those who love poetry!

The following verses are written, that I myself was in the creative impulse. They include 60 irregular verbs. I hope you enjoy reading them! You yourself can write these rhyming. Why not? A creative approach to any problem not only leads to a rapid and effective solution but also gives a lot of positive emotions! It is important not just to do anything, because we need, and do it with pleasure! Try to change their attitude to the problem. Let irregular verbs will be not a burden, but a joy!
