Learning the Present Perfect time through songs

The way in which I use fairly simple. It allows us to engage in context. What is the context? What is it made up when we study English? The context — all components of the cultural formation of language: news, films, broadcasts, songs, books, newspapers. Everything which we can hear foreign speech. Which of these categories often happens at the hearing? Of course, the song! We listen to a lot of songs, and most of them in English. Well, the perfect material for our methods.

The method is to remember a line from a song that contains the key phrase or word. Every time you need to play this proposal, in memory will pop melody with the correct phrase. This kind of association.

Here is an example. I love old American musical «Singin ‘in the Rain.» The name of the musical coincides with the first line of the song Singing in the rain. And when you need to translate from English to Russian phrase «rain», your brain itself is an option in the rain, because it sits firmly melody of the song. And you know that the rain — it’s not under the rain Not at the rain Namely IN THE RAIN.

The only thing that should take care when using this method — is a reliable source of information. Many well-known performers of «sin» improper grammar or incorrect pronunciation.

So, I suggest you create some strong associations with time Present Perfect, using the songs in English.

  • We hope that you already know all about this time in our article «Time Present Perfect (Present Perfect time).»

Connection with Present

The most important thing when using the Present Perfect — it is clear that it is related to the present, that is. E. The action is done in the past, but the results we see in the present. This rule will help us to remember an amazing band Queen and timeless hit «We are the champions».

I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime
I served a term
For a crime he did not commit

A crime he did not commit, in the past, but he suffered his sentence for him. Here it is the connection to the present.

Unknown time in the Past

We use the Present Perfect, talking about what has happened recently, but did not call when. In this case, common question: Where have you been? And beautiful song Chris Rea (Chris Rea) on Blue Cafe or Cafe «Sadness» («The Blue Café») tells us:

Where have you been?
Where are you going to?
I want to know what is new
I want to go with you
What have you seen?
What do you know that is new?
Where are you going to?
Because I want to go with you
Where have you been?
Where are you going?
I want to know what’s new
I want to go with you
What did you see?
What you know is new?
Where are you going?
Because I want to go with you

You can certainly choose a more modern song. For example, listen to Rihanna (Rihanna). She sings about how beloved somewhere to hide from it:

Where have you been
Cause I never see you out
Are you hiding from me, yeah?
Somewhere in the crowd
Where have you been?
I never see you
You’re hiding from me?
Somewhere in the crowd

The song is called «Where were you?» («Where have you been?»), And listen to it here:

Action within a specific time period

Also, time Present Perfect is used when the action is done, but the time period has not yet ended. Effective with the words today, this week, this year, so far. James Blunt (James Blunt) in his song «Stay The Night» sings:

It’s 72 degrees, zero chance of rain
It’s been a perfect day
72 degrees, zero chance of rain
Great day

72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius) — great weather. Very small Chance of Rain. Here are fruity and James says that the day is wonderful, but it is not over yet, so it’s been a perfect day.

Personal experience

We use the Present Perfect, when talks about his life experiences, about what happened to us during life. Celine Dion (Celine Dion) asks: «Have you been in love?» (Have you ever been in love?), Will ever in your life you loved? It is a matter of personal experience.

Have you ever been in love?
Have you ever walked on air?
Have you ever said a prayer?
Have you ever felt this way?
You were in love?
Did you go on the air?
You prayed?
Did you feel it?

Action started in the past and continues up to the present

When we say that the action began in the past, is the result and still lasts in the present, we should use the Present Perfect Continuous. But there are verbs, for example: be, love, hate, are not used in Continuous, and then we will again use the Present Perfect. It knows Adele (Adele), and in his song «The one and only» («One and only») she sings:

You’ve been on my mind
I grow fonder every day
Lose myself in time
Just thinking of your face
You are on my mind
I love you more every day
I’m losing track of time,
Just remember your face.

You’ve been on my mind you came to my mind once in the past and continues to be in my head.

I have been to and I have gone to

The Present Perfect is necessary to be very careful with verbs been and gone. When we say that someone somewhere has gone, or went and returned, then use been. When we want to say that someone has left or left and did not return — and maybe not ever come back — in this case using gone:

I have been to Italy. — I was in Italy. (I returned)

He has gone to Paris — He went to Paris. (it’s still there)

Remember this rule will help us a song «Where have all the flowers?» («Where have all the flowers gone»). The song is about how to disappear and disappear young guys becoming a soldier. They are killed in the war, their graves grow flowers. These flowers rip off the girl they marry guys who become soldiers and killed in the war. That’s the anti-war philosophy. Watch the video here:

So we walked through the main uses of the Present Perfect. Repeat:

  1. The result in the present.
  2. Recently an event action (no time specified).
  3. The action is done, but the time period has not yet ended.
  4. Description of experience.
  5. Instead Present Perfect Continuous with verbs be, love, hate etc.
  6. Remember about the difference been and gone (gone and never returned).

I wish you successfully use the Present Perfect to talk, to listen to the songs of the offer several times.

  • Do not forget to take the test at the time of Present Perfect and Past Simple.
