What does the vowels and consonants

Vowels, as in English, or in any other language — it’s musical sounds that can sing, «lend a voice.» In education and pronunciation (articulation) vowels airflow in the vocal apparatus is not created obstacles (lips, teeth, tongue, etc.). And they alone constitute syllables. Try to pronounce all the vowels and note using any of this happens: changing the position of the lips, part air flow pronunciation occurs on exhalation. And what about the consonants? The principle of the pronunciation of consonants is more vigorous, the airflow created some obstacles. To get a consonant sound, articulation system (larynx, vocal cords, tongue, palate, teeth, jaw and lips) performs a combination of cooperation of individual organs. From vowels, consonants differ a lot of stress, and are not melodious. That is why the lessons of music notes sung on the vowel sounds.

In English, there is a very controversial letter «y», which can transmit both a vowel and a consonant. In combination with a vowel, especially at the beginning of words, it can be considered a consonant (yes, you, young, yard, yoga, yellow, yam, yogurt). In this position, the letter «y» represents sounds [y] and [j], the pronunciation is very close to the Russian [d]. If this letter is functioning independently, forming syllables, is paired with a consonant, it can be attributed to the vowels. As the vowel «y» transmits sound [i] (similar to Russian «and»): system, mystery, funny, baby, and [ai]: my, cry, sky, reply, analyze, cycle. In the words of day, they, boy, toy, buy, eye letter «y» represents the second component of the diphthong [ei], [oi], [ai].
